Rachel Apa’s father says rhabdomyolysis caused her death after NYC Marathon collapse; official finding pending

Updated November 3, 2026.

Rachel Apa, 24, died after collapsing near mile 24 of the New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1. She was running her first marathon in support of Parkinson’s research, in honor of her late grandfather. The Pennsylvania native had played field hockey at Bucknell University.

Her father, Steve Apa, told The New York Times that doctors attributed her death to rhabdomyolysis. That is the family’s account of what doctors told them. The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner has not announced an official cause of death. A spokesperson told the New York Daily News that the initial autopsy was inconclusive and further testing was needed; the office also told CBS News that no final determination had been made.

According to race organizer New York Road Runners, a bystander began CPR after Apa collapsed. Event medical staff continued CPR and used a defibrillator before paramedics took her to a hospital, where she died. The organization has expressed condolences to her family and the running community.

The CDC explains that rhabdomyolysis occurs when damaged muscle tissue releases proteins and electrolytes into the blood. It can cause serious complications, including kidney damage. These general facts do not establish the precise medical sequence in Apa’s case; the medical examiner’s investigation is still pending.

Our condolences are with Rachel’s family, friends and everyone who knew her. We will update this report when the official findings are released.
