Two people are dead, including the suspect, after a shooting Wednesday at Citibank’s Tampa-area office complex in Brandon, Florida, authorities said.
Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies responded to what they called an active threat and cleared the campus buildings as employees evacuated. Sheriff Chad Chronister said investigators believe the incident was targeted. Authorities had not immediately identified the people who died, explained what led to the shooting, or confirmed whether anyone else was injured.
The Citibank campus has four three-story office buildings that house thousands of employees. Television footage showed workers streaming out of the complex while officers responded. Citigroup said it was aware of the incident and was cooperating with authorities.
For employees and families, the uncertainty was frightening. One father told the Associated Press that his son called after fleeing the campus, but the father struggled to reach him again for about an hour because of a poor connection.
Investigators have not announced a motive. The sheriff’s assessment that the incident appeared targeted remains preliminary as the investigation continues.
